VMAs 2020: Ariana Grande to perform with Lady Gaga

A pandemic-era MTV Video Music Awards ceremony took place last night in a surprisingly seamless fashion, with host Keke Palmer ably providing the glue to hold everything together. Much of the fanfare of the evening was devoted to Lady Gaga, an artist who has historically out-crazied the ordinarily-quite-bonkers VMAs at every turn, from her masked archival Alexander McQueen outfit in 2009 to 2010's notorious meat dress to her 2011 performance of "You and I" in boy drag.

According to Variety, the show drew 6.4 million viewers across all ViacomCBS platforms during the simulcast, a 5% drop from 2019. That number includes the pre-show, main event, post-show and encores; no figures were available for only the two-hour primetime broadcast.By comparison, last year’s event — including the two-hour primetime show itself, hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco — drew an audience of 6.8 million for all programming.
