Victoria Pendleton is one of this country’s most successful female Olympians. After she was spotted by Marshall Thomas – the former national track coach for velodrome cycling – at just 16, she quickly rose to prominence in the cycling world, going on to win nine world titles and representing Great Britain in the 2005 and 2012 Olympics. But it’s been far from plain sailing for Victoria, who’s been open about suffering from lows along the way.The star – who was diagnosed with severe depression in 2018 – showed bravery by admitting she was in a “dark place” with her illness.
She had two counsellors and was prescribed different types of medication, as she told Sarah Ann Macklin on her podcast Live Well Be Well, “I think I fell down the trap that many people do.” And speaking to us exclusively, Victoria admits, “Being diagnosed with depression was a hard time for me. I didn’t understand what was making me feel that way, so I sought help. I am so thankful for the support I have had.” When asked how she feels five years down the line, Victoria, 41, confesses her love for surfing was one of the things that helped her see the light at the end of the tunnel. “I am good.
Basically, I just started to do things that made me happy. One of the things that really makes me happy is to go surfing because it’s one of my favourite sports,” she tells us. “I took myself to Costa Rica and I did that for a month.
It was hard. Everyone was like, ‘You’re crazy. You’re gonna go halfway around the world by yourself?’ I told them, ‘I’m gonna do it!’” She went on
