It’s something they’ve mastered for the past 10 years.

William Earl Variety will publish its third annual 10 Artisans to Watch list on Oct. 23 and recognize the honorees at this year’s SCAD Savannah Film Festival. As Variety continues to bring the work of the artisans to the forefront of coverage, the 10 selected will be spotlighted in a panel conversation at the festival moderated by Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay.

Production designer Helen Jarvis had never been to Japan, nor had she read James Clavell’s original novel that the series is based on. Nonetheless, she was determined to bring authenticity to the locations when building the world of feudal Japan in the 1600s.

She dove deep into researching the period, collecting photos of the young men on the military bases so she could create individual styles for the actors and their characters. She even got samples of the original uniforms.

She eventually does make it into the Hastings Research Institute to realize her life’s ambition, despite her male colleagues dismissing her with comments about her need to smile more.
