A formation of US fighter jets tore through the skies of Fife today and sent local residents into a social media frenzy.
The formation of approximately five or six airplanes was spotted in the skies at lunchtime on Friday, with dozens of social media users posting pictures and videos.
Data from tracking website FlightRadar24 revealed that one of the planes was a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker heading out to the Atlantic Ocean from RAF Mildenhall.
The gargantuan jet is packed with fuel and can fill up fighter jets in mid-air.
No other flight data was available for the planes that accompanied the tanker plane across Scotland's air space - suggesting its travelling partners were clandestine fighter jets.
Margaret Litster said on Facebook : "Just saw them go over Kirkcaldy bus station what a lovely sight everybody looked up to see them."
Ann Elias said: "Passed Skye and saw one getting refuelled once the were over the sea."
Doug Peattie wondered: "Have they changed there route home? i have never seen this above my house before and i have lived here for 19 years."
Despite being an RAF base, Mildenhall is primarily a US Air Force (USAF) base and is home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing.
Its sister base, Lakenheath, also serves first and foremost as an American air base, hosting the 48th Fighter Wing, which is made up elite F-15 fighter pilots.
Both bases are in Suffolk and have hosted American troops for decades.
While the bases are owned by the UK Ministry of Defence, it currently has no role in their day-to-day operations.
The Record has contacted USAF for comment.
