EXCLUSIVE: Universal Studio Group and the non-profit Ghetto Film School are reteaming to host the second annual “USG University” panel event series launching June 16. The showcase will consist of a mix of virtual panels and an in-person component this year.
“USG University” was created to empower the next generation of great storytellers through accessible industry discussions where students will learn from creatives behind USG’s extensive slate of programming.
“We launched USG University last year to such tremendous success that we are making this an annual tradition in hopes of continuing to inspire the next generation of storytellers,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, Chairman, Universal Studio Group. “At USG, we are committed to supporting a diverse pool of ambitious, creative, and passionate talent who have unique and authentic stories to tell, and there is no better place to foster up-and-coming creators than with students at the Ghetto Film School.”
Year two will expand from its inaugural installment and will feature virtual panels that highlight the studio’s premium comedy series, including the Emmy Award-winning Hacks and Russian Doll, as well as American Auto, Girls5eva, Grand Crew, Harlem, Kenan, Killing It, Mr. Mayor, Resident Alien, We Are Lady Parts and Young Rock.
Each panel will examine the creation of a show from the perspective of series talent, executive producers, and creators amongst USG’s four studios, Universal Television, UCP, Universal Television Alternative Studio, and Universal International Studios. Creators will also have the opportunity to dissect the making of a standout scene from their show.

Reginald Ponder Hailing from India by way of Brooklyn, filmmaker Urvashi Pathania had to learn to get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations — starting at home. As a child immigrant, Pathania had to adapt to a new culture and new ways of existing that didn’t quite mesh with her parents’ upbringing. “I was always bringing these American ideas home and having to talk to them about how I was experiencing life versus how they grew up,” she says. By the time her short film project “Beasts” was selected for Indeed’s Rising Voices program, the producer-director was already well-versed in tackling challenging subjects in a way that brings people together. “I think I found a way to tell tough stories, but in a way that doesn’t alienate people,” says Pathania. While Pathania had to navigate various personal and cultural minefields over the course of her life, her career path has always been clear and direct. She entered her first film festival when she was just seven years old; once she discovered the power of film to inspire and educate, she pursued this path with a fierce intentionality. “One of the reasons I love being a filmmaker is because I get to dive really deep into whatever project I’m working on and immerse myself in different communities and see how different people live in the world,” says Pathania.

United Talent Agency (UTA) has acquired the legacy UK literary and talent agency Curtis Brown Group, UTA announced Monday.Curtis Brown Group, which was founded in 1899, will continue to operate under its current name and management, including CEO Jonny Geller (pictured center). But the deal expands UTA’s international footprint and this structure will allow both Curtis Brown Group and UTA to continue their longstanding relationships with other agency partners in the UK and US. Curtis Brown has more than 240 employees and is expected to continue to grow as a result of this deal.
