Universal Pictures International is sorry for misgendering Laverne Cox!

Oscar-winning flick, directed by Emerald Fennell, was set to premiere in the country on May 13, though it’s since been pushed back after fans voiced concerns on social media, the Guardian reported. Universal Pictures International opted to have male actor Roberto Pedicini, 59, provide vocals for Cox, a 48-year-old transgender woman.

The Guardian points out that past Laverne Cox characters in “Orange In the New Black,” “The Mindy Project” and the series “Doubt” were also all voiced by a male actor, Andrea Lavagnino.The Guardian also spoke with transgender Italian actress Vittoria Schisano, who has dubbed Cox in the past and expressed her outrage at the “Promising Young Woman” release, saying that she was not asked to read for the part.

Promising Young Woman.The film was due to arrive in Italy today (May 13), but it has been postponed after a clip of Una Donna Promettente, shared by Universal Pictures Italy, received heavy criticism for overdubbing Cox with a male voice.In the clip Cox’s character, Gail, could be seen talking to Carey Mulligan’s character, Carrie.

Fans of Laverne Cox might not have seen any of the European versions of Promising Young Woman, but if they did, they’d notice something really off about her character.

English-language movies are often dubbed into other languages for international audiences, with actors fluent in a particular language substituting their own voices for the original dialogue.

E! is rolling out the red carpet for Laverne Cox. The network announced Monday that it was pulling in Cox, 48, as the host of its flagship red carpet show, "Live from E!," replacing Giuliana Rancic.
