Narco-Saints.According to Reuters, a statement from the Suriname government announced plans to explore legal action against the producers of Narco-Saints (titled Suriname in its Korean promotional material), saying it negatively portrays the South American country as a “narco state”.The statement reportedly that the series’ depiction was based on past “crime and cross-border activities”, which the government says it has endeavoured for decades to eradicate. Notably, the story depicted in Narco-Saints was based on real-life events that occurred roughly two decades ago.Created by The Spy Gone North filmmaker Yoon Jong-bin, Narco-Saints stars Ha Jung-woo (Ashfall, Entourage) as Kang In-gu, an entrepreneur who lands in Suriname for business and ends up getting framed by a Korean drug lord operating in the country and sent to prison.As he’s beginning to serve his sentence, In-gu is roped into a secret mission by Choi Chang-ho (Squid Game’s Park Hae-soo), an agent of the Korean National Intelligence Service.

John Hopewell Chief International Correspondent Atresplayer Premium, the burgeoning OTT service behind HBO Max hit “Veneno,” has renewed “The Gypsy Bride” (“La novia gitana”), whose Season 1, from “Penny Dreadful” director Paco Cabezas, world premieres at the San Sebastian Film Festival.  Atresmedia Television will produce with Banijay Iberia’s Diagonal TV, producer of Netflix hit “Heirs to the Land.”Produced by VIS with the participation of Atresmedia Television and the collaboration of the Diagonal TV, the first season of “The Gypsy Bride” will bow on Atresplayer Premium on Sept. 25.  Directed in its totality by Cabezas, whose credits also include “American Gods,” Season 1 is set in a gypsy community on Madrid’s humble outskirts as homicide inspector Elena Blanco, (Nerea Barros, “Marshland”) is called in to investigate the torture and assassination of a young woman just before her wedding.

Netflix has announced it has commissioned The Vince Staples Show, a fictional comedy series loosely inspired Vince Staples and his life story. Staples is joined by producers Kenya Barris, best known for creating Black-ish, Corey Smyth and Calmatic.

Filming has been taking place in Bolton town centre this week ahead of a new Netflix crime thriller series set to air next year on the streaming platform. Crews have been seen shooting scenes for Bodies, an adaptation of a graphic novel by Si Spencer.

Rapper Vince Staples is set to headline his own scripted comedy series at Netflix. The streamer has given a series order to The Vince Staples Show, starring and executive produced by the critically acclaimed artist, actor and creator, from Kenya Barris and his Khalabo Ink Society.

Staples will star in the show as himself. The show will be set in Long Beach, CA, where Staples grew up.Staples will executive produce in addition to starring. Kenya Barris is also executive producing via Khalabo Ink Society. Ian Edelman, Maurice Williams, Corey Smyth and Calmatic also executive produce. Edelman and Williams are co-showrunners on the series. Barris, Edelman, and Williams also executive produced Kid Cudi’s animated Netflix show “Entergalactic.” Calmatic will direct the first two episodes of “The Vince Staples Show.”

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV. “Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.

For all the noise that Nicolas Winding Refn makes with his daring, provocative, controversial, and challenging films, perhaps one of the least-seen things any modern auteur has made in recent years is his series, “Too Old To Die, Young,” starring Miles Teller which was seemingly not promoted and dumped on Amazon in the summer of 2019. That’s a shame because as difficult as it was to watch, violent, gruesome, brutal, and confrontational as it was, “Too Old To Die Young” was a blistering statement about America.

During her search, she encounters her nemesis Rakel, as they “embark on an odyssey through the natural and the supernatural”.Refn is best known for directing 2011’s Drive starring Ryan Gosling and 2016’s Neon Demon with Elle Fanning.

Netflix has dropped the first teaser for Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming six-episode series Copenhagen Cowboy which will debut at the Venice Film Festival later this week. Netflix has cast the roles of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the upcoming sixth series of The Crown.Two actors, Rufus Kampa, 16, and Ed McVey, 21, will play William, while Meg Bellamy will take on the role of Kate Middleton.The announcement comes ahead of the launch of series five of the popular royal-related drama, which is due to return in November. Both McVey and Bellamy are relative unknowns, and were reportedly selected for the world-famous Netflix show after submitting self-taped auditions for a casting call put out on social media.

Naman Ramachandran Netflix and the European Producers Club (EPC) have revealed the winners of a pitch contest for fictional series at the ongoing Venice Film Festival. The pitch contest is a joint initiative by EPC and Netflix to help create new opportunities for European women producers. It was launched at Series Mania in March, and open to EPC producers working for women-owned companies. Following a selection process by an independent jury, composed of Cia Edstrom, Francine Raveney and Olivier Kohn, the competition finalists pitched their projects to the Netflix content team. Anna Mannion of Tri Moon Films, Ireland, won the first prize of €50,000 ($49,762), while Ada Solomon of Microfilm, Romania, won the second prize of €20,000.
