Travellers have been warned to follow strict hand luggage rules this summer as failure to do so is the “biggest cause of delays at airport security”. It comes after six airports were forced to do a U-turn on the 100ml limit for liquids in cabin bags.
New security scanners are being rolled out across UK airports which will bring an end to the 100ml restrictions on liquids in hand luggage. The technology will also mean passengers will no longer have to remove certain electronic devices from their bags when passing through security.
The government had set a deadline of June 6 for the systems to be installed, although several major airports including Manchester and Heathrow were granted extensions. Despite the fact some airports met the deadline, on June 8 the Department for Transport announced that airports had to reintroduce the 100ml limits.

This applied to London City, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford, Southend and Teesside airports. The rules at Manchester Airport have not changed, with passengers always told that they must comply with the 100ml limit. The airport has previously said that it is making “good progress” with installing the scanners, which are expected to be fully installed in 2025.
Regarding the reintroduction of the 100ml limit across the six airports ahead of the summer holidays, a travel expert has warned of “heightened confusion” following the “sudden U-turn”. Mike Harvey, managing director at 1st Move International, said that it’s vital passengers stick to the rules to avoid “delays”.
