Tom Jones: 'Fans gave me the strength to carry on after wife Linda's death'

Tom Jones has become the oldest male artist to top the UK album chart, with his latest record Surrounded By Time. The 80-year-old Welsh Crooner beat the record previously held by Bob Dylan, who reached No 1 in 2020 with Rough and Rowdy Ways, at the age of 79.

Sir Tom Jones, 80, opened up on the inspiration behind a poignant song on his latest album Surrounded By Time, which is dedicated to the memory of his beloved late wife Linda Trenchard. The particularly emotional musical number tells the story of how the singer's spouse had urged him to carry on with his career, despite her having just days left to live.

Tom Jones sits in the day’s late sunshine wearing a navy-blue smoking jacket and a patterned cravat that ruffles beneath the tan of his face. After 41 years in Los Angeles, he now lives in London, in an apartment that looks out over the river, and where he says he has hung pictures of the Welsh bare-knuckle fighter Dai St John, and the terraced house where he grew up in Pontypridd.
