Charlie Puth Talks the Wonder of TikTok: ‘People Can Burp and Fart, Auto-Tune That and Put It to a Beat’

Ilana Kaplan It’s been seven years since Charlie Puth’s single “See You Again” thrust him into the pop spotlight. While the pandemic cratered the touring business, Puth, like almost all musicians and performers, turned to social media to stay in the public eye. He used TikTok to reach out to fans, replacing some of the energy that came from live shows. Not only did his more than 19 million followers get some of his thirst traps, but they also learned a handful of lessons about music theory. Now, the New Jersey-born singer is ready to bare all with his third album, “Charlie.” How did Tik Tok transform your music career? It made me very open-minded to showing the process. I used to have this mentality of “I need to go away for an extended period of time and work on my music alone and not show anybody and give away the secrets.” But now I can give every secret away. It actually makes the songs more vibrant.

Emily Ratajkowski, Freer Now Than Ever, Gets Candid on TikTok, Britney Spears and What Her New Podcast Has in Common With Joe Rogan’s

Britney Spears was released from her conservatorship. As the subject of “Toxic,” one of Ratajkowski’s most pointed pieces about growing up as an object of lust and scrutiny, Spears has long been a preoccupation for the 31-year-old model, author and mother. Almost a year later, Ratajkowski is thinking about the world’s many reactions to how a newly freed Spears has expressed herself — especially in her ongoing Instagram series of cheeky, defiant nudes, a genre Ratajkowski knows well.  “She’s gone through things that affect you for the rest of your life,” Ratajkowski says, “and she has this public stage where we will continue to watch her. It just makes me sad. And the way people are like, ‘Come on, you’re a mother!’ has really fascinated me. It’s Britney Spears! I’m sure she has a very complicated relationship to being sexualized. But she’s now doing it on her own terms. So why are we ripping her apart for that and bringing into the conversation that she’s a mother?” She pauses, then adds with a sigh, “I don’t know why we hate women so much. It still shocks me all the time.”

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Bethenny Frankel says she’s had enough of scammers on TikTok using her voice, image or content to sell counterfeit products. The entrepreneur and star of “The Real Housewives of New York” filed a federal lawsuit against ByteDance’s TikTok, the hugely popular short-form video app, alleging that TikTok has ignored her requests to remove unauthorized content that misappropriates her likeness. The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, demands unspecified monetary damages and a permanent injunction barring TikTok from misusing the “personas, voices, content and/or likenesses” of Frankel and other potential members of the class. “Despite demands on TikTok to remove and police this corrupt conduct, TikTok has ignored such demands, and even taken countervailing positions,” Frankel’s lawsuit says. “Aside from not being compensated, the reputation and brand of Ms. Frankel and Class Members are being damaged and tarnished through unauthorized associations with counterfeit goods and other products that they do not support.”

We hate to admit it, but we love it when there’s a bit of drama in the beauty world.Take earlier this year, for example, when Jones Road launched its What The Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm in the US – and it immediately caused a furore on TikTok. It all started when content creator Meredith Duxbury posted a video onto the social media platform, applying the product and sharing her not-so-complimentary thoughts. The TikToker spread on two very large spoonfuls of the foundation (much more than the brand recommends), before proceeding to dismiss it after seeing it split on her skin.
