A lifer who murdered the brother of gangland boss Tam McGraw has been given another year behind bars after attacking guards with a razor blade.
Thomas Main, 50, lashed out as he was being locked up for his own safety after another prisoner hit him, a court heard yesterday.
Main admitted assaulting officers Adam Lang and Robert Hannah at HMP Shotts in Lanarkshire on August 28, 2020.
Prosecutor John Coogan told Hamilton Sheriff Court: “He lashed out with what appeared to be a razor blade, attempting to hit the two officers and striking Mr Lang on the arm.
“Fortunately, no injury was caused and the officers managed to close the door on the accused.”
In 2014, Main was ordered to serve at least 17 years and six months when he was convicted of killing Francis McGraw at the victim’s flat in Glasgow.
He stabbed McGraw, said to be his best friend, more than 40 times. Tam McGraw, known as The Licensee, was one of Scotland’s most notorious gangsters and was said to have made a £30million fortune from a life of crime. He was 55 when he died of a heart attack in 2007.
Sheriff Thomas Millar added another year to Main’s 17-year sentence. He told him: “Any attack on a prison officer must be dealt with seriously.
“It must be brought to everyone’s attention that such assaults will not be tolerated.”
