To some they were an eyesore, to others they were a landmark which meant they were home.
While they may have divided opinion, east Manchester’s iconic gas holders have been a legacy of the area’s industrial heritage for decades.
But despite once playing an integral part in securing Manchester’s gas supply, advances in technology have consigned them to history.

National Grid, who owned the gas holders, was given permission to demolish the rusting structures – located off Bradford Road and Alan Turing Way, near the Etihad stadium – in 2022. The Bradford Road gas holder has been demolished and work to dismantle the Alan Turing Way tower is well underway.
While some living in the shadow of the gas holders viewed them as a relic from a bygone era, others in nearby Miles Platting say they are sad to see them go.
Anthony Bowden, who has lived on The Mews for 22 years, says he used the now partially demolished gas holder by Alan Turing Way to direct people to his east Manchester home. While it used to loom in the background, it's no longer visible from his street in its partially-dismantled state.
“It’s a good thing because it’s just a piece of useless wasteland,” the 47-year-old told the Manchester Evening News.
“But now it’s gone, I kind of miss it. My back garden points directly at it. When it was there, I was always a bit like, ‘Hmm,’ but now it’s not, it’s like, ‘Oh, okay. It’s not there. It’s just a bit of the area that’s always been there.’
“I hope they’ll build something good to replace it, as long as it’s not something big. I just hope they don’t build anything monstrous.
