'The Tonight Show', 'Late Show' and More Late Night Talk Shows Are Going Without Audiences Following Coronavirus Pandemic

David Letterman famously helped Americans rebound from the trauma of 9/11 with a stirring monologue delivered from the stage of his show’s home, New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater. Now his heirs are working to do the same – from a basement. A garage. A self-styled ‘bunker.’ A backyard. With their kids. In the woods.

NEW YORK -- Billie Eilish, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys and Dave Grohl opened their doors — literally — as the musicians performed from their homes for an hour-long benefit concert to raise money for those affected by the coronavirus crisis.

Production on New York’s top talk shows has been temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The next time James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel or David Spade deliver a few jokes, they won’t hear anyone in the audience clapping or laughing. And that will be by design.

Late night is going to be a little quieter very soon. In a coordinated move announced Wednesday, late-night shows produced out of New York City announced they would soon begin taping without live, in-studio audiences out of concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

TV’s late-night laughs will continue. But they will have to do so without live audiences to make them.

Late night is about to get a lot more quiet as several late-night talk shows have decided to broadcast without a studio audience amid growing concerns over the the coronavirus.
