Producing Variety’s Power of Women Event Cultivates Creative Community

KC Orcutt While success is often said to be the result of good planning, one could argue that a plan is only as good as the team executing it. From conceptualizing the stage design to crafting an engaging run of show, event production is a collaborative art not for the faint of heart, especially when the intention behind a brand activation is to honor philanthropic achievements and celebrate those making an impact.  Now in its 13th year, Variety’s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime, is an homage to women in the entertainment industry who are leading the charge and dedicating their time offscreen to supporting various charities and causes. As Power of Women, which takes place twice a year in New York and Los Angeles, continues to grow and expand, Variety and its collaborators take great care in executing an event that, as the name suggests, is all about elevating and empowering women. As such, it is only fitting that a conscious effort is made to hire vendors of different backgrounds to produce an event of such magnitude, with an emphasis on partnering with women-owned and operated companies.

‘So Help Me Todd’s’ Disappearing Husband Plot Was Inspired by The Producer’s Real Life

“So Help Me Todd” made its debut on CBS Thursday night and for anyone who saw the episode and thought, “That couldn’t happen,” well, the show’s jaw-dropping plot is rooted in creator/executive producer Scott Prendergast’s own experiences. In the premiere episode, Joan (Marcia Gay Harden) enlists the help of her son Todd (Skyler Astin) – despite him being somewhat adrift in his life – to help her out when her husband disappears, like, without a trace. “It is very personal to me,” Prendergast, who created the series, told TheWrap. “There was a time in my early 30s when my life was falling apart and I was trying to get into entertainment.

Two People Arrested in Connection With in PnB Rock’s Murder, Third Suspect Sought

Jem Aswad Senior Music Editor A teenager and a woman are in custody in the murder of rapper PnB Rock, who was shot fatally on Sept. 12 in Los Angeles, police confirmed to Variety on Wednesday. Police are also searching for the teenager’s father in connection with the murder, whom they say is armed and dangerous. A minor was arrested on suspicion of murder, and Shauntel Trone, 38, was arrested on suspicion of accessory to murder, LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz told the Los Angeles Times. The minor’s father, Freddie Lee Trone, 40, is still at large. The LAPD has released his photograph and requested public assistance in locating him. Rock, 30 (real name: Rakim Allen) was murdered at Roscoe’s House of Chicken & Waffles in South Los Angeles, where he had been dining with his girlfriend. A gunman demanded jewelry and other valuables from him before getting into a struggle with PnB and opening fire, LAPD Chief Michel Moore told the Times. Moore added that the shooting occurred soon after the rapper was tagged online as being at the restaurant, and police are investigating whether the post led to the attack, although an earlier report in TMZ says that the attackers had been sitting in the restaurant’s parking lot at the time of the post. That report also says that Trone and his son burned the getaway car in an effort to destroy evidence.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Original Cast Members Returning for Netflix Sequel ‘Axel Foley’

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Eddie Murphy is reuniting with his original “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars — Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot — for the upcoming sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.” Netflix picked up the rights in 2019 to release the next “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, which is currently in development. “Axel Foley” is the fourth installment in the hit action-comedy franchise, following 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” 1987’s “Beverly Hills Cop II” and 1994’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” For the fourquel, producers opted to ditch the roman numerals and instead name the film after Murphy’s fish-out-of-water character, a Detroit police officer who travels to Los Angeles to investigate crimes.

‘Rust’ Producers Get Main Claims Dismissed in Script Supervisor’s Lawsuit

A Los Angeles judge has dismissed the primary claims of assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress against the producers of “Rust” in a civil lawsuit from the film’s script supervisor, Mamie Mitchell. In a hearing on Friday via multiple media reports, a judge tossed both of the main claims against Rust Movie Productions, Thomasville Pictures, Ryan Smith and Langley Cheney, writing that it was not possible for them to know that Alec Baldwin would shoot the gun that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The producers have previously argued in civil court and in contesting a fine from the New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety Bureau that they were not responsible for supervising the set and merely financed the film.
