A Korean street food restaurant wants to transform a corner of Piccadilly Gardens into an al fresco dining area.
Bunsik, which has three eateries in London and opened its first northern location in Piccadilly Gardens this summer, is applying for planning permission to open an outside seating area in the square. Bosses want to utilise space outside the Gardens’ Pavilion for customers.
The tables and chair will front out onto the existing grass area. The application develops on some minor alterations to the concrete structures which currently separate the square from the main bus station.

Those works include removing the central roof section of the concrete Pavilion to create two separate structures, plus a host of other improvements. These plans are not to be confused with the £25 million overhaul of Piccadilly Gardens, which is expected to be announced in the autumn.
The latest development in the saga of the square’s redevelopment was the confirmation that LDA Design has been appointed to oversee the scheme. The Northern Quarter firm has been tasked to develop plans and detailed designs to 'create a world class space in the area centred around Piccadilly Gardens', the council says.
Before then, Bunsik hopes to have tables and chairs outside its location, which specialises in Korean street food, in particular corn dogs. “[The proposal is] a good balance between the applicant’s operational needs and will safeguard the amenities of occupiers of nearby properties,” a design and access statement said. “All tables, chairs, and barriers (including any ancillary equipment) will be stored inside the premises.
