'The Marksman' Tops Languishing Box Office With $2M

Super Bowl weekend is always quiet in terms of moviegoing, but this year marked an all-out washout due to the ongoing pandemic and continued theater closures in many major markets. The Los Angles-neo nor crime-drama The Little Things stayed atop the chart in is second weekend with $2.1 million for an estimated 10-day total of $7.8 million in North America and $13 million globally.

Holdover play continued to dominate the international box office this weekend, notably Disney/Pixar’s Soul which led the frame with $9.3M in 13 markets amid scant drops in both Russia and Korea. This brings the offshore total to $85.2M.

Liam Neeson is proving to be the king of the North American box office throughout the pandemic. The actor’s previous movie "Honest Thief" shot to the top of the box office in October amid a slew of theater closures that prompted several movie studios to postpone their major blockbuster releases until at least 2021.

Holdover romantic drama A Little Red Flower topped a quiet weekend at China's box office, earning $11.7 million for a local total of $182.8 million. Fellow holdover Shock Wave 2, a crime thriller starring Andy Lau, scored second, adding $7.8 million for a four-weekend haul of $163.2 million, according to data from Artisan Gateway.

Liam Neeson's latest action thriller The Marksman dominated a quiet Martin Luther King Day box office with an estimated four-day opening of $3.7 million, including $3.2 million for three-day weekend. The Marksman is directed by Robert Lorenz, Clint Eastwood's longtime collaborator and stars Neeson as an Arizona rancher and former Marine who rescues a young boy from the clutches of a Mexican cartel.
