Hello,
You might have thought the row over the future of Oldham Coliseum was over after the venue closed its doors for good back in March after nearly 140 years.
As we know, the plan is now for the Coliseum theatre company to anchor a £26m new theatre in the town in the former Post Office and Quaker meeting house on Union Street - though that won’t happen until 2026.
But Dame Vanessa Redgrave, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Emma Thompson are among those now calling for ‘the Coli’ to reopen and be restored as a producing house.
A letter published in The Stage and signed by a number of actors, artists and community leaders calls for fresh talks about the old theatre, which they say is ‘not beyond repair’. The council has previously said the Coliseum theatre building couldn't have been saved and was ‘not fit for purpose’.
Whether the support of these big names makes a difference to the trajectory of the project is yet to be seen. But it’s certainly a coup for the new Oldham Coliseum Theatre Ltd board - who insist many of the problems at the original Fairbottom Street building are ‘relatively minor maintenance issues’.

The fight to save the soul of Manchester city centre has been something of a running theme in this newsletter over the last few months. And a man who knows plenty about it is our chief reporter Neal Keeling. He has been reporting on the projects that could change the face of the city, such as the fate of an old carriage works at King Street West.
Tomorrow,
