A popular Northern Quarter pub and boutique hotel has reopened its doors after a huge £200,000 investment featuring new booth seats and a revamped bar.
The Abel Heywood, located on the junction of Turner Street and Red Lion Street, has been operating as one of the area’s best loved venues since it first opened ten years ago. The pub just so happens to also be a firm favourite of the likes of Christopher Eccleston and Shaun Ryder too.
As part of the renovations to the venue, a former textile warehouse, the existing Victorian-style décor has been updated and new signs and lighting have been added. Operated by Salford-based brewery and pub retailer Hydes, it is the first venue this year to benefit from the chain’s investment fund to refurbish its properties.

“The investment is very welcome and should give the Abel Heywood a renewed lease of life,” General manager Alex Allan, who has run the Abel Heywood for the past 10 years, said.
“We’ve come through some very tough trading conditions in the past few years but we’ve remained an important part of the city centre’s social scene, helping to celebrate what Manchester has to offer.
“The Abel Heywood is now in a great position to build on the success and reputation it has worked so hard to achieve and maintain since we first acquired it a decade ago. We’re sure the improvements will help cement our status as a firm favourite in the Northern Quarter.”
The pub, also popular with stars Dave Spikey and the Courteeners, has served as a backdrop for shows including BBC’s Cutting it over the years and has also been used as a breakout area for actors filming productions nearby in the area.

official finance report published by the Danish Palace Tuesday shows that the majority of the couple’s income — paid for by the state — covered their housing and staff costs. It also covered other “dependent” members of the Danish royal family.Of the nearly $2 million they raked in, $323,000 was set aside as a “grant” for Mary, who was the Crown Princess at the time ahead of Queen Margrethe II’s abrupt abdication in January. This left them with just under $415,000 to spend on leisure travel, shopping, and personal expenses.Margrethe, who stripped her youngest son’s family of their royal titles before her abdication, received an eye-watering sum of $8.4 million, with a private allowance of $5.7 million, in 2023.Frederik and Mary will be looking to cash in even more this year. The pair are also owners of a luxury ski lodge in Switzerland, which they list on AirBnB for up to $20,000 per week. The Danish royal family’s appanage system is set to be challenged by the government, which hopes to overhaul the current arrangement, according to local outlet DR News. This means that the royal family’s finances will be more transparent to the public, and will indicate the exact amount the royal household is given, as well as how they choose to divvy up the sum.Unlike the British royals, the Danish royal family does not need to pay taxes.Frederik and Mary ascended to the throne after Queen Margrethe — third cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II — revealed in her New Year’s speech on Dec. 31 that she would be stepping down on Jan.
