Joy Oladokun Is Reaching Out to the Pop Mainstream With New Album — Even Though, ‘as a Black Queer Human, I’m a Pretty Divisive Figure on Paper’

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic This past awards season, Joy Oladokun was nominated for the Grammys’ first Song for Social Change award, for a song off her previous album called “I See America.” If all you ever heard — or heard about — was that tune (opening lines: “I saw God out on the block today / He was darker than the preachers say”), or know that Oladokun once called herself “the trap Tracy Chapman” (half-jokingly), you could easily leap to the assumption that she’s more of a protest singer than a pop artist. But can she be at least a little bit of both? She takes it as a compliment that anyone would use that second P-term in describing her third album, “Proof of Life.” Oladokun has been out on the road opening for John Mayer, and the new record is so radio-friendly — and just so friendly, generally — that it wouldn’t feel like a stretch to see her doing tour dates with someone like a Taylor Swift.

Amaarae announces new album Fountain Baby, shares new song

Ghanian-American artist Amaarae delivered a jewel of a debut album in 2020 with The Angel You Don't Know, an infectious album of alté-pop so memorable it landed on our annual Best Songs of the Year list twice in a row: once in 2020 with "Fancy" and again the following year for the Kali Uchis-featuring "Sad Girlz Luv Money" remix that conquered TikTok and racked up hundreds of millions of streams. Today, Amaarae is sharing the details of her sophomore album Fountain Baby: it's coming June 9, and today you can hear its latest single "Co-Star." Serene harp melodies, a boisterous Afrobeat, and Amaarae's commanding falsetto all drive “Co-Star” through its witty celebration of star signs and their romantic compatibility.

PJ Harvey announces new album with enchanting single, ‘A Child’s Question, August’

PJ Harvey has announced her upcoming 10th album, ‘I Inside The Old Year Dying’ with the release of the lead single, ‘A Child’s Question, August’. Check out the track below.Shared today (April 26), the new single follows a series of teasers shared by Harvey on social media, and follows on from her last full-length LP with 2016’s ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’.According to the double Mercury Prize-winning artist, ‘I Inside The Old Year Dying’, was written over a period of three weeks, although stemmed from ideas dating back to 2017 when she felt she had lost her connection with music.Seeking to revive her connection with songwriting, the inspiration for the new tracks was uncovered following advice from film-maker Steve McQueen, who told her to ignore the ‘process of writing an album’, and instead rediscover why she first fell in love with “words, images and music”.The album will see the singer-songwriter return to her roots – inspired by the likes of Nina Simone and Bob Dylan – and provide fans with “a resting space, a solace, a comfort, a balm” which is created to feel “timely for the times we’re in.”Today also sees Harvey share the first single from the LP, ‘A Child’s Question, August’.
