The Exorcist directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty is considered, still, perhaps the greatest horror film of all time, certainly the most popular. It has been endlessly imitated for the past half century right up to now, recently and notably David Gordon Green’s critically reviled 2023 reboot The Exorcist: Believer, which even brought original Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn back into the fold after all these decades. But the OG is impossible to touch, so what was going through Joshua John Miller’s mind when he decided to take on a new film so closely linked to it?

There exists a moment, perhaps several, in director Sandi DuBowki’s documentary “Sabbath Queen” where shaky attempts to solidify focus on one subject as numerous struggles for screentime become blindingly apparent and the project threatens to spiral out of control. That’s not to say there isn’t a compelling narrative throughout, only that there are too many, and in such a chaotic effort, topics become somewhat diluted to varying degrees, and meaningful quotes from any of the frequent talking heads start to lose their impact.

The three-episode series, which premiered on May 29, follows a group of TikTok dancers who believe they are involved in a talent management company called 7M. The docuseries focuses on Miranda Derrick, a member who’s estranged from her family, which is desperately trying to get her out.
