‘The Exorcism’ Review: Russell Crowe Is Fighting Demons Again But This Time The Devil Is In The Details

The Exorcist directed by William Friedkin and written by William Peter Blatty is considered, still, perhaps the greatest horror film of all time, certainly the most popular. The 1973 movie was even nominated for 10 Oscars and won two, unheard of in the genre at that time. It has been endlessly imitated for the past half century right up to now, recently and notably David Gordon Green’s critically reviled 2023 reboot The Exorcist: Believer, which even brought original Exorcist star Ellen Burstyn back into the fold after all these decades. But the OG is impossible to touch, so what was going through Joshua John Miller’s mind when he decided to take on a new film so closely linked to it?

‘Sabbath Queen’ Review: LGBTQ Radicalism Meets Jewish Tradition In This Well-Meaning, But Overstuffed Documentary [Tribeca]

There exists a moment, perhaps several, in director Sandi DuBowki’s documentary “Sabbath Queen” where shaky attempts to solidify focus on one subject as numerous struggles for screentime become blindingly apparent and the project threatens to spiral out of control. That’s not to say there isn’t a compelling narrative throughout, only that there are too many, and in such a chaotic effort, topics become somewhat diluted to varying degrees, and meaningful quotes from any of the frequent talking heads start to lose their impact.

William Earl administrator Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality. ‘Sabbath Queen’ Review: A Provocative If Cluttered Face-Off Between Different Notions of Judaism

Dennis Harvey Film Critic With the question “What is a Jew?” as much of a politicized hot potato these days as it’s ever been, “Sabbath Queen” adds plenty of fuel to an already fiery debate. Like director Sandi DuBowski’s prior documentary “Trembling Before G-d” (2001), this long-aborning followup puts a spotlight on LGBTQ protagonists struggling to make a place for themselves within — or despite — the cultural and religious strictures of the Orthodox Judaism they were raised in.

Michael Angarano and Michael Cera on Fatherhood, Casting Kristen Stewart and Making the Buddy Comedy ‘Sacramento’

Brent Lang Executive Editor When Michael Angarano was trying to get “Sacramento,” his indie buddy comedy about two friends who go on a road trip to a certain state capital off the ground, the question he’d get was always the same. Does it really need to be set in Sacramento? “At one point we were ready to shoot the movie in Atlanta — we had the financing and everything,” remembers Angarano, who directed the film, as well as co-wrote it. “And this was for a movie called ‘Sacramento.’ But it’s like why try to cheat it? Maybe, we should we just call it ‘Athens’ or ‘Savannah’?” And even though Angarano and his co-writer Chris Smith weren’t that familiar with the city that inspired their film, its appearance on a highway sign, informing them of the California city’s distance from Los Angeles, was foundational.

Jazz Tangcay Artisans Editor Artisans working on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” found inspiration in Meryl Streep’s body of work when the three-time Oscar winner joined the series as Loretta Durkin, a quirky, struggling, bohemian actor, for the show’s third season. ‘The Big Door Prize’ Season 2 Review: It’s Better, But Does The Mystery Box Comedy Have More Potential?

What if a mysterious machine allowed you to reveal your life’s potential? What if said machine was an arcade-style machine sporting the curious name Morpho located in a small town convenience store? What if the streaming powers stretched such a concept throughout a ten-episode AppleTV+ season, with the potential for more? Such a premise acted as the connective tissue of “The Big Door Prize, “ based on a novel and a passable attempt at light comedy with semi-philosophical notions laced throughout as the residents of Deerfield contend with the machine’s appearance and what exactly the card emerging from a slot below means to each of them.  Continue reading ‘The Big Door Prize’ Season 2 Review: It’s Better, But Does The Mystery Box Comedy Have More Potential? at The Playlist.
