A TV series adaptation of John Wyndham’s sci-fi classic The Day Of the Triffids has been put into fast-track development by Amazon Studios. According to sources, Johan Renick, Emmy winner for HBO’s Chernobyl, is attached to direct and executive produce. Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive produce for Angry Films.
With its post-apocalyptic setting and plot, Wyndham’s 1951 novel draws parallels to HBO’s breakout hit The Last Of Us. In The Day Of the Triffids, after most people in the world are blinded by a meteor shower, triffids — tall venomous, carnivorous plants — start killing the rest. The story centers on Bill Masen, a biologist who specializes in triffids. He leads survivors in their fight against the killer plants and at some point rescues a young sighted girls and travels with her for several days.
The English book has had three UK radio adaptations and a 1962 feature starring Howard Keel. There also have been two BBC limited series, most recently the 2009 The Day Of the Triffids featuring an all-star cast that included Dougray Scott as Bill Masen, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Vanessa Redgrave, Eddie Izzard and Jason Priestley. The book also influenced the British post-apocalyptic horror movie 28 Days Later.
Murphy’s association with the property dates back to 2010 when he was attached to a proposed 3D The Day Of the Triffids feature adaptation. Angry Films’ (and predecessor Montford Murphy Productions) feature credits include Real Steel and the Transformers franchise.
Renck won two Emmys for Chernobyl, Outstanding Directing as well as Limited Series, which he shared with the rest of the show’s producing team. As Deadline reported, he recently exited HBO Max’s Dune: The Sisterhood series.

Addie Morfoot Contributor Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. CPH:DOX will reflect on the repercussions of the war, which ousted Saddam Hussein, but never led to the discovery of weapons of mass destruction, by screening two documentaries: Greta Stocklassa’s “Blix Not Bombs” and Karrar Al-Azzawi’s “Baghdad on Fire.”“(The invasion) was an event that has shaped international politics over the course of the last two decades in unpredictable and often devastating ways,” says CPH:DOX head of program Mads Mikkelsen. “Not least inside Iraq itself. (‘Blix Not Bombs’ and ‘Baghdad on Fire’) provide two different takes – a shot and reverse shot – on the course of events back in 2003 and on the current situation in Iraq as seen from the inside and through the eyes of the young.”“Blix Not Bombs” follows Hans Blix, the former head of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, who was sent to Iraq in 2002 to determine whether U.S. suspicions that the country was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction were founded. Though the final report found no evidence of an Iraqi weapons program under Hussein, the U.S. and a coalition of allies nevertheless decided to invade the country. Now in the final stretch of his life, Blix questions whether he did enough to prevent a war whose impact is felt to this day.

This kind of statement is beyond entitled and toxic. I love her work, but life’s too short to deal with people like this in the business.“She’s young, so maybe she doesn’t know any better (but she should),” he wrote. “She should also ask herself how she would feel if the showrunners gave an interview and talked about how difficult she was and refused to perform the material.”In the podcast, Ortega said that nothing about the character Wednesday “made sense to her”.“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on ‘Wednesday,’” she shared. She continued to give examples of some out-of-character moments in the show: “Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense.

2023 Oscars «In Memoriam» segment. While this year's tribute to those stars we've lost was moving and emotional — featuring a tearful introduction from John Travolta and a powerful performance of «Calling All Angels» by Lenny Kravitz — glaring omission of some big-name stars shook up some viewers at home.Anne Heche — who died following a fiery car crash in August at the age of 53 — was not a part of the segment, despite her many film roles. Also absent from the televised tribute was longtime film veteran Tom Sizemore — who died on March 3 at age 61, two weeks after suffering a brain aneurysm that left him hospitalized. One of the most surprising omissions was that of Charlbi Dean, who died on Aug. 22 at age 32, given that dean has a prominent role in, which was nominated for three Oscars at this year's ceremony.Other stars who were notably missing from the broadcast's tribute segment included screen veteran Paul Sorvino, star Fred Ward, comedian Gilbert Gottfried, beloved comic actor Leslie Jordan, actress Cindy Williams, longtime journalist Barbara Walters and Lisa Marie Presley, who collaborated with director Baz Luhrmann on his Oscar-nominated biopic Elvis. In an effort to defend their choices, and honor all the stars who have died this past year, the show directed viewers to the longer In Memoriam tribute on their website, but many fans were confused and upset about the decisions that went into choosing who to honor during the show itself.Following the blaring omission of Sorvino, his widow, Dee Dee Sorvino, released a statement to ET, expressing her disappointment with the Academy.«Paul Sorvino was one of the greatest actors in cinematic history in Hollywood.

Jordan Moreau SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on HBO Max. The world of “The Last of Us” just got its first major clue as to how Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey in HBO’s hit adaptation, became immune to the deadly cordyceps fungus. And, in a poetic, full-circle moment, the finale brought back actor Ashley Johnson, who originally starred as Ellie in “The Last of Us” video game, to play Ellie’s mother, Anna. The Season 1 finale opened with a flashback to Ellie’s birth — which had never been seen in the 2013 video game nor its 2021 sequel. Before Sunday night’s episode, there were no confirmed details about how Ellie became immune to cordyceps, and Anna had never appeared onscreen. In the episode’s surprise opening sequence, the season finale revealed that Anna was bitten by an infected person moments before giving birth to Ellie. Anna kills the assailant before cutting the umbilical cord, but those moments of connection may have created within Ellie a “chemical messenger” that “makes normal cordyeps think she’s cordyceps,” as Marlene (Merle Dandridge) later explains in the episode. (Dandridge is the only actor in “The Last of Us” who plays the same character that she did in the game.)
