McKinley Franklin editor Angelina Kekich has taken on the task of designing costumes for projects such as Steven Spielberg’s “Falling Skies” or Stephen King’s “The Stand.” However, when it came to tackling the costumes of “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” it’s evident that the job was a passion project for the designer. “This was an intense, passionate, emotional experience for me,” Kekich tells Variety. “It was important to follow in the steps of Albert Wolsky,” the costume designer for the 1978 “Grease” film.  “The costumes needed to meet the demands of the choreography,” Kekich says. To accomplish this, she worked together with head choreographer Jamal Sims. She says, “The costumes needed to be durable and had to withstand the vigorous dance sequences.”

Naman Ramachandran Shant Joshi’s Los Angeles and Toronto-based company Fae Pictures (2023 Cannes title “In Flames”) has boarded Cape Town-based company Giant Films’ “Runs in the Family.” Fae will executive produce and handle the festival launch of the LGBTQ+ road trip family drama, a clip for which has been unveiled. The film is by real-life father-son duo Ian Gabriel (“Ludik”) and Gabe Gabriel (“No Hiding Here”). Ian directed and Gabe wrote and stars in “Runs in the Family.” The film marks Gabe’s first professional role since he came out as trans in 2019. The film follows a reformed con artist, Varun (Ace Bhatti), and his transmasculine son, River (Gabe Gabriel), on a road trip across South Africa to break River’s estranged mother (Diaan Lawrenson) out of rehab. When injury befalls Ollie (Cleo Wesley), River’s drag partner and best friend, his mother propels father and son to partner up for a drag competition that could win River his gender-affirming surgery.

Delpy’s comeback to French filmmaking since “Lolo,” “The Barbarians” is a satirical comedy unfolding in a small town in Brittany which is preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees after voting unanimously to greet them in exchange for subsidies from the government. But instead of seeing Ukrainians come into town, they see Syrian refugees, causing some tensions among locals and testing their liberal beliefs.
