It's more popular than Champagne – not to mention far more purse-friendly. And it has fewer calories than wine. So it's no wonder that more and more of us are turning to Prosecco as our tipple of choice.
In fact, an estimated 412 million bottles were consumed worldwide in 2020, an estimated increase of 36% over five years. And Prosecco is becoming so popular, it's not just a drink, but something of a lifestyle – there's Prosecco advent calendars, Prosecco bath bombs, Prosecco socks and even a Prosecco festival. Yet it seems you can have too much of a good thing, as Prosecco has become so popular, there have been times when suppliers have almost run out.
During what was dubbed the Great Prosecco Shortage of 2016, Sainsbury's withdrew all bottles from its shelves following exceptionally high demand for the fizzy stuff. Experts warned of another shortage again in 2018, with wine production slumping to its lowest level in decades after France, Spain and Italy were all hit by freakishly hot and cold weather in the previous grape-growing season. Yet with the world heating up thanks to climate change, all the Prosecco popping could soon be stopping, according to new research.
Scientists say the mountainside vineyards, where Prosecco is produced, are at risk from soil degradation and drought, which could also affect grapes used in Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The study lists poor soil and less rain as the biggest threat to the industry, with its author, Dr Paolo Tarolli, of the University of Padova in Italy saying that climate change is affecting the people as well as the product. "The last half past century has been characterised by rural exodus and a gradual abandonment of mountain landscapes," he said.
