Emily Longeretta The days of fall TV being the time for new shows to premiere are long gone. This summer, prep for bingeing per usual with a slew of unscripted and scripted series coming to both streamers and network TV. Likely the most-anticipated series of the year, HBO’s “The Idol,” will premiere in July after a great deal of delays and reshoots.
Original director Amy Seimetz suddenly exited in 2022 after multiple episodes had been filmed; in March 2023, star Lily-Rose Depp released a statement defending creator Sam Levinson, who took over as director. Meanwhile, this summer sees a bumper crop of new unscripted programs and docuseries, including FX’s “The Secrets of Hillsong,” exploring the megachurch in a never-before-seen way. Here’s a look at some of the big new titles coming, in chronological order.

effectively predicted Donald Trump’s ascension to the presidency as well as his “Make America Great Again” slogan back in 2013. It’s an “Everything Everywhere All at Once” reunion!
Alison Herman TV Critic The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike. “Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree. “Class of ‘09” takes an equally unconventional approach, splitting its story into three separate timelines to tell a cautionary tale that spans decades.
CBS now canceled 2 TV shows for the 2023-2024 TV season, but thankfully, just un-cancelled a big fan favorite that had previously been axed.

Michaela Zee editor Hollywood has had considerable feats of Asian representation this year: “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” historic Oscar wins, Netflix’s “Beef” and, on May 24, “American Born Chinese.” However, despite the nuanced portrayal of the Asian American identity within the phantasmagorical world of Chinese mythology, Ke Huy Quan was hesitant about joining the series’ Asian-led ensemble. “I remember when I first heard about this character when I was offered the role, it scared the hell out of me. In fact, I actually passed on it because I told our creative team that this is the type of portrayal that we do not want to see in 2023,” Quan said during a post-screening Q&A at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday night.
The White House hosted a screening of the upcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese, and in remarks beforehand, President Joe Biden keyed in on the presence of its star, recent Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan.
