Actor Danny Masterson has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the rape of two women.
He was facing 30 years to life for the charges, but the defence only asked for concurrent sentences of 15 years. A jury found the That 70s Show actor guilty of the crimes on May 31.
The assaults took place in 2003 when Masterson was actively filming the popular series. The actor was alleged to have raped a third woman but the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on the allegation and the charges were dismissed.
The judge in the case said as she handed down the verdict: "Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here. Your actions 20 years ago took away another person's choice and voice. Your actions 20 years ago today were criminal, and that's why you are here."
Originally, this case was ruled to be a mistrial in December 2022. After the finalised May 31 conviction, the defence has asked for yet another new trial. The request was denied by Judge Charlaine Olmedo who heard impact statements from the two unnamed survivors before making the sentencing.
Masterson was first accused of rape in 2017 during the #MeToo movement. At the time, he denied the accusations and said each encounter was consensual. Charges were brought against him after a three-year investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
At the time of the assaults, Masterson and all three of his accusers were Scientologists. Several of the women said it took them years to come forward because Church of Scientology officials discouraged them from reporting the rape to police.
Scientology officials told one survivor she would be kicked out of the Church unless she signed a non-disclosure agreement and accepted a payment of $400,000 (£320,000), according to prosecutors.
