Television Academy Makes Change to Acting Categories at Emmy Awards

The 48th annual Daytime Emmy Awards are set to air Friday at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT with a virtual two-hour broadcast on CBS that will also be livestreamed on Paramount+ and the CBS app as it airs in each market. The Talk co-host Sheryl Underwood returns to host the ceremony in Los Angeles for a fifth time.

48th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be honoring several TV legends. Kathy Lee Gifford, Ken Jeong, Martha Stewart and Robin Roberts will make special appearances during the awards ceremony to pay tribute to the late Regis Philbin, Alex Trebek and Larry King.Both Trebek () and King () have posthumous nominations, Trebek for Outstanding Game Show Host and King for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host.Additionally,   star Diamond White will be giving a special performance during the In Memoriam

The Emmy Awards are giving nominees the option to be more gender-inclusive with their statues.  The Television Academy's Board of Governors announced Monday that it has approved rule changes that will allow nominees an option to request that their nomination certificate and possible Emmy statuette use the term "Performer" rather than "Actor" or "Actress."  The move answers recent calls from gender non-conforming stars to make the awards system less dependant on pronouns and gendered casting. 

The Emmy Awards have gone gender neutral. The Television Academy's Board of Governors has confirmed that nominees in the Best Actress or Best Actor awards can choose to be called a "performer" rather than an actor or an actress when the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards take place in September this year.
