TelevisaUnivision reported a 1% year-over-year dip in U.S. advertising revenue in a third quarter otherwise propelled by the company’s strike-resistant media operations in Mexico.
Ad revenue came in at $459.4 million for the period ending September 30, while total revenue for the privately held company rose 11% over the prior-year quarter to hit $1.28 billion. Operating income before depreciation and amortization was flat at $412.2 million.
Excluding spending on political and advocacy spots, advertising in the U.S. rose 3%. TelevisaUnivision came into the third quarter with a unique story in the challenged media sector, with viewership and ad revenue showing increases in recent quarters as most rivals experienced decline.
Another differentiator for the company in 2023 has been a lack of vulnerability to the writers and actors strikes, which have squeezed most media companies. Most of TelevisaUnivision’s production activities occur outside of the U.S., and the company also has a healthy amount of news, sports and unscripted fare across its platforms.
In Mexico, the company said ad revenue increased 21%, with the driver being private sector growth from both new and existing clients.
Vix, the company’s flagship streaming service, has now reached 40 million monthly active users. In its earnings release, the company said it remains on track to turn a profit in streaming by the middle of 2024.
Subscription and licensing revenue increased 18%, including 11% growth in the U.S. and 39% growth in Mexico. Both territories benefited from the premium tier of Vix, with the company also crediting pricing growth on linear subscribers and increased content licensing revenue driven by demand for Vix premium content.
