Valerie Wu Intern Hollywood is mourning Suzanne Somers, star of sitcoms “Three’s Company” and “Step by Step,” who died Sunday after a long battle with breast cancer. The actor would have celebrated her 77th birthday on Monday, Oct. 16.
Somers was known for her roles as bubbly “dumb blonde” Chrissy Snow in “Three’s Company” and single mom Carol Foster Lambert in “Step by Step.” Somers left “Three’s Company” in 1980 when her request that she be paid the same as her male co-star, John Ritter, was denied. After the end of “Step by Step” in 1998, Somers transitioned to a career in health and beauty, becoming the national spokeswoman for exercise device the ThighMaster. Over time, she built a fitness empire from TV infomercials and an expansion into e-commerce.
She also made an appearance in 2015 on Season 20 of “Dancing with the Stars.” Fran Drescher, Kathy Griffin and Barry Manilow are among those who have paid tribute to Somers. SAG-AFTRA president and “The Nanny” star Fran Drescher posted a photo of herself and Somers on Instagram, writing, “The heaviness of this past week’s horrors just got worse with the loss of friend Suzanne Somers. She was a sweet & talented woman, a wife and mother.
Survivor and thriver for more than two decades. But so sad to say she passed away today. Life is very hard, wherever we can bring joy, love, empathy and kindness as we move thru each day, do it! RIP dear Suzanne, you will long be remembered.” A post shared by Fran Drescher (@officialfrandrescher) “I am shocked and saddened,” wrote comedian and actor Kathy Griffin on Threads.

obtained by The Blast, which noted that a biopsy was done to confirm the cause, although no autopsy took place. Contributing factors also included hypertension (high blood pressure) and hydrocephalus — a neurological disorder of the brain that involves a buildup of fluid — according to the report. The former “Three’s Company” and “Step by Step” star died Oct. 15 in Palm Springs, California, after a years-long battle with cancer.
Editor’s note: On the 100th day of SAG-AFTRA’s strike, the 160,000-strong guild and the studios are once again not talking, and no new negotiations are planned. Writers are back at work, but with no actors deal, Hollywood production remains shut down. SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher asserts that it doesn’t have to be like this, that the economic suffering has to be solved. But first, she writes, the studios have to return to the bargaining table and stop playing games with the industry and people’s livelihoods.

Thanks, George. But your proposal to take the cap off union dues in order to end SAG-AFTRA‘s strike isn’t legally compatible with the union’s contract.
Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg It’s hard to overstate the late 1970s stardom of Suzanne Somers, who died on Oct. 15 in Palm Springs at 76. “Three’s Company” made Somers one of the most popular faces on TV, thanks to Chrissy Snow, the naive and charming character she played on the ABC sitcom. Somers fought for equal pay decades before it became a rallying cry for female actors — and she wound up getting fired for it. But Somers bounced back with TV series like “She’s the Sheriff” and “Step by Step,” and became a ubiquitous author and TV pitch woman. Perhaps even more importantly, she inspired a new generation of stars — including Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg.
