The former owner of a sunbed shop has been fined thousands after he admitted taking away dangerous fluorescent tubes to burn at home. Saidi Masood, the former owner of Golden Glow Sunbeds on Halliwell Road, appeared at Bolton Magistrates Court on August 16 where he was found guilty of failing to dispose of waste correctly.
He was found to have breached his duty of care by failing to produce any evidence of correct business waste disposal, including the disposal of sunbed tubes which are classed as hazardous waste. In September last year, a Bolton Council enforcement officer attended Golden Glow Sunbeds and asked Masood to provide evidence of lawful business waste disposal.
When questioned by the enforcement officer, Masood initially denied producing any waste but then admitted that he took home a couple of bags of rubbish which he burned. He was subsequently issued with an on-the-spot fixed penalty fine which was not paid.
In January 2023, Masood resigned as the director of Golden Glow Bolton Ltd. The court fined Masood £3,000 and was ordered him to pay costs of £2,040 as well as a victim surcharge of £1,200.
Golden Glow was fined £2,000 and handed an £800 victim surcharge. Fluorescent tubes are classified as hazardous waste, falling under the section of industrial products.
This means that they need to be recycled differently to normal waste, otherwise they could harm the environment, wildlife and humans. Tubular and compact fluorescent bulbs contain the hazardous metal mercury the vapour of which is colourless and odourless.
