Movies are back in a big way, and after two pandemic-plagued years, we’re ready to celebrate their return.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” kicked off summer blockbuster season with record-breaking numbers, showing audiences are more than ready to return to theaters, especially for larger-than-life superhero spectacles from the likes of Marvel and DC.“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Jurassic World Dominion” are likely to draw the most moviegoers this summer, but there’s also plenty of choices for families, like “Lightyear” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.” For those not tempted by superheroes or dinosaurs, counter-programming plays include “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” and “Where the Crawdads Sing” along with horror titles like “Nope.”One new wrinkle is that movie theaters are adding a surcharge for the biggest movies, so filmgoers might pay a premium of $1 or $2 more for the hottest titles this summer — think “Top Gun: Maverick” or “Jurassic World Dominion.”If those prices induce sticker shock, there are plenty of significant titles premiering on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Max and Disney +, so whether you feel like a night out on the town or it’s more of a couch potato kind of evening, there will be fresh cinema selections to look forward to all summer long.

It’s Memorial Day Weekend in the U.S., and you know what that means— Summer Movie Season is upon us. Chris Pratt admitted he "sacrificed a lot" to film the "Jurassic World" trilogy. Sitting down with co-star Bryce Dallas Howard, Pratt explained it's "sad" to see the franchise come to an end. "Both of us sacrificed a lot over the past eight years, blessed beyond all belief to be a part of this thing, and it's sad," Pratt told the Associated Press.
Angelique Jackson As the women of “Jurassic World Dominion” reflect on the franchise’s feminist origins, the movie’s youngest female lead, 15-year-old Isabella Sermon notes the importance of having a powerful trio of women — Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler, Bryce Dallas Howard’s Claire Dearing and DeWanda Wise’s Kayla Watts — to look up to.“It’s important to have these female role models,” Sermon says in the clip above.
Women are inheriting the earth.
Laura Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler in 1993’s “Jurassic Park” has been immortalized on T-shirts, bumper stickers and coffee mugs ever since the first film in the mega-billion-dollar dinosaur franchise debuted in theaters. But that piece of sexual politics wasn’t in the original script.“God bless everyone involved who allowed this to be in a movie,” Dern says, reflecting on the scene.
It’s not just the dinosaurs that have evolved in the Jurassic World universe, turns out the humans have as well.
The dinosaurs are ready to stomp into China with a June 10 date confirmed for Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion. This will be in step with the North American release — a rarity of late — after international rollout begins a few days prior. Now, that’s how you do an 1980s film sequel.Walking into “Top Gun: Maverick,” starring Tom Cruise, viewers violently shake with nervousness that they might witness a nightmarish repeat of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — all their favorite ‘80s stars and characters reunited after decades, wasted, embarrassed and chasing after aliens. Then the movie starts. All it takes is the opening scene of Cruise as Maverick pushing a plane’s limits to a daunting Mach 10 while “Highway to the Danger Zone” plays to realize that this is a worthy, often exemplary followup to the 1986 classic.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media ReporterFor the past two years, box office reports have been accompanied by a COVID-shaped asterisk: Ticket sales were [insert adjective of choice] for a pandemic. After all, “Wonder Woman 1984,” “F9: The Fast Saga” and every would-be blockbuster in between could have generated more in ticket sales without a devastating global health crisis upending the movie theater landscape. But as “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” debuted to $90 million last October ($10 million more than its predecessor) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” landed the second-highest domestic debut in history with $260 million, the caveats began to fade. Add in “The Batman” ($134 million debut in March) and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” ($71 million start in April, $13 million more than its predecessor), and those numbers weren’t just notable for a pandemic, they were plain notable.
Goofing off with dinosaurs isn’t allowed in the “Jurassic World” universe.
Some are newcomers. Some are former child stars reintroducing themselves in adult roles. And one is a comedian making a leap to big screen.
