Steven Naismith insists Hearts are wiser for their woes against Rangers. And he’s confident they can reverse the trend of defeats in their fifth meeting of the campaign.
Naisy reckons his men have been through the mi and ridden every emotion against his former club. There was a 2-1 sickener at Ibrox in October when Rangers fought back with two last-gasp goals. In the League Cup semi-final, three second-half goals in 14 minutes sunk Hearts at Hampden.
Abdallah Sima sneaked a 1-0 win at Tynecastle to dash Hearts’ hopes. Then, in February, Jambos were destroyed in a 5-0 Ibrox demolition job. The Gorgie gaffer insists there’s no inferiority complex – despite those downers. He said: “We’ve probably gone through every feeling. In stages, we’ve been good. What we’ve worked on and what we’ve tried to do has been good. Small moments cost us big-time. In the semi-final we were a wee bit unsure or didn’t play with freedom when we had the ball.
“So we never caused them as many problems as we should have. We need to carry more threat than we did that day, for sure. I felt we lacked a wee bit of belief in that game. But we definitely have a lot more belief in everything we’re doing now so that gives me confidence.
“The 5-0 loss was just horrendous defending from us. Rangers didn’t do anything which made us go: ‘Woah, we really need to watch against that'."
When asked if he thought his team had evolved since those setbacks, Naismith said: “I think all round, yeah. We’ve a few bodies on the pitch scoring, from different areas of the pitch. We’re definitely a different team than in that semi-final. If you have desire and belief that you want to win it – and I think we have – then we give ourselves a chance.”
