Jim Jarmusch reveals why he’ll never watch Star Wars

Star Wars movies. The director said in a new interview that he takes issue with “mass things being shoved on me” and knowing “so much about them and the characters” without ever actually having watched them.He told The Believer: “I have particular things I will never see. I will never see any ‘Star Wars’ films, because I resent that I know so much about them and the characters.“Why is all that in my head when I’ve never actually seen one, you know? Why do I know about R2-D2 and Darth Vader and all these things when I’ve never even seen any ‘Star Wars’ film?”He continued: “I’ve never seen Gone With The Wind and I never will, just because I feel like it’s forced on me and it’s some kind of corny thing.”The Dead Don’t Die filmmaker added that he’s “not hierarchical” but he is less drawn to big, commercial works.“But because I really, deeply love the craft of filmmaking, I, of course, like masterful filmmakers’ work. But I watch all kinds of stuff,” he said.

‘They Cloned Tyrone’ Review: Jamie Foxx and John Boyega in a Sociological Sci-Fi Nightmare

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic In America today, no one has a lock on conspiracy theory. It has become the air we breathe, the Kool-Aid we drink, the rabbit-hole ideology that defines too many of us. Yet conspiracy theories come in different shapes and sizes. Many are false, some are true. Many are bat-house crazy, some are more than plausible. All, in one way or another, work as metaphors: for the forces (within government, corporations, whatever) that collude in hiding things from us, for the sinister tantalizing truth that we aren’t allowed to see. “They Cloned Tyrone” is a slow-burn inner-city sci-fi nightmare thriller, one that plays off the spirit of conspiracy theory that has often thrived — with justification — within Black culture. The Tuskegee experiment was a conspiracy that happened; its horrific impact on the hearts and minds of African-Americans is beyond measure. And in the 1970s, the belief that the CIA, linked by the war in Vietnam to the Golden Triangle (the source of most of the world’s heroin), was dumping drugs into America’s inner cities was a notion that gained currency, culminating a decade later in the theory that the CIA was the hidden force behind the crack epidemic.

John Boyega Ranks ‘The Last Jedi’ as His Worst ‘Star Wars’ Movie: ‘In the Most Respectful Sense’

Zack Sharf Digital News Director John Boyega was asked by “Hot Ones” to rank the films in his “Star Wars” trilogy, which kicked off on a high note in 2015 with the beloved “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and then got polarizing with 2017’s “The Last Jedi” and 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens is most definitely the best,” Boyega answered “Second, for me, comes [‘The Rise of Skywalker’]. The worst – in the most respectful sense – is [‘The Last Jedi’]. But they’re all lovely.” Boyega cracked a smile and gave some side eye, alluding to the fact that many “Star Wars” fans already know Boyega’s grievances with the space franchise. He notably told GQ magazine in 2020, “What I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”

‘Star Wars Outlaws’ is inspired by movie-making tricks of the 1970s

Star Wars Outlaws is largely influenced by the practicalities of movie-making in the 1970s, as well as the series’ iconic “visual language of reduction”.Revealed in the Xbox Games Showcase last month, Star Wars Outlaws is “set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi”. Not only are the narrative and characters rooted in the original movie trilogy, but the creative director Julian Gerighty has said that everything that the player sees in the game will feel like it’s been lifted from one of the sets.In an interview with EDGE Magazine, Gerighty shared that Ubisoft Massive took the time to develop technology that “emulates some of the lenses of the ’70s” to create a grainy and gritty Star Wars game.“So you have the vignetting, film grain, lens breathing, the curvature of a thicker lens, the slight lens flares – all of these things that are very subtle, but come together to give you a more cinematic experience,” explained Gerighty.Expectedly, these effects are likely to be optional so that players are able to switch settings.

‘They Cloned Tyrone’ Review: John Boyega, Teyonah Parris & Jamie Foxx In Grim But Gutsy Genre Mashup

Rather resembling a blaxploitation-based cousin of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a deeper sense of social consciousness, They Cloned Tyrone is a predominately grim yet intriguing account of constrained, little-hope lives victimized even further by nefarious secret attempts to transform them into obedient, well-behaved zombies. Set in what appears to be the late ‘60s-early ‘70s based on the period cars, outfits and outlandish hairstyles, Juel Taylor’s feature directorial debut, which he wrote with Tony Rettenmaier, delivers live-wire performances from the young cast but nonetheless remains notably dire, even forlorn in its depiction of small-town lives momentarily confronted with a bizarre enemy found right in their midst. This Netflix offering opens theatrically July 14 for a week prior to its move to home tubes July 21.
