‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Overtakes ‘Avatar’ To Become The Third-Highest-Grossing Movie At The Domestic Box Office

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter“The Batman” landed a bigger opening weekend than Warner Bros., the studio behind the comic book adventure, initially expected.The latest superhero epic, starring Robert Pattinson as an exceptionally moody Caped Crusader, collected $134 million in North American theaters over the weekend, above Sunday’s estimates of $128.5 million.Those ticket sales rank as the best opening weekend of 2022, as well as only the second pandemic-era movie to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend following “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”The reason behind the 4% bump in Monday’s final tally is because “The Batman” had a better-than-expected turnout on Sunday, bringing in $34.1 million. That’s more than some pandemic-era releases managed to earn in their entire theatrical runs.

Those ticket sales are three times as much as the next highest-grossing movie of the pandemic era, which is Disney and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” with $224 million.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media ReporterMere months after Tom Holland ignited box office charts with “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the 25-year-old British actor is swinging back to movie theater marquees with “Uncharted.”Ahead of its domestic debut on Feb. 18, Sony’s big-screen adaptation of its popular video game series opened at the international box office to a solid $21.5 million from 15 overseas markets.“Uncharted” had the biggest start in the United Kingdom, landing in first place with $6.4 million.

Netflix’s six series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Punisher, as well as their Avengers-style crossover event The Defenders – will have two more weeks to get their fix, with all 13 combined seasons leaving the platform’s UK site at the start of March.It’ll be slightly earlier for Netflix subscribers in some regions, with NME confirming that in the US, Canada and some European countries, the full slate of series – which were produced between 2015 and 2019 – will leave the service on February 27.
