If you weren’t paying attention yesterday when the Grammy Award nominations were announced (understandable, if you’re more into film than music), something interesting happened. Sure, Beyoncé led the nominations, with Taylor Swift not far behind, but movie fans might have noticed an interesting nomination.

Whenever a flick debuts at a film festival and then takes a year to come out, people can suspect the worst. Well, I’m here to tell you that Our Friend is an exception to that.

Hardly a week goes by where a movie doesn’t opt to move out of their current theatrical release window. The reasons remain obvious.

Some of you might have missed this earlier in the week, but my favorite bit of film news actually concerns a book. Of course, it’s a book based on an Academy Award winning movie, and comes from an Oscar winning filmmaker, but still.

Earlier on in the week, Amazon Studios dropped a Trailer for Regina King’s directorial debut, One Night in Miami…The movie is a dramatized look at an amazing evening spent between four huge historical figures. Since its film festival debut, King and the cast have gotten raves, with massive Oscar attention paid to it, and rightly so.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. made an announcement that makes a lot of sense, but not everyone in the industry expected to see.

Today brought the inaugural nominations for the Critics Choice Super Awards. As a voting member of the Critics Choice Association, seeing this list of nominees is a welcome reminder that there’s still been a wonderful assortment of films released in 2020.

Strong execution can make almost any premise work. Especially when it comes to thrillers, in particular ones with somewhat confined spaces, the concept often is ridiculous.

The first word on Mank is finally here! Yesterday evening, the Netflix release screened for the first time, with yours truly among the crowd getting a chance to take it in. In short, the film is great and certainly an Oscar contender.

Earlier today, the Critics Choice Association, of which I happen to be a member, announced the nominations for the fifth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards. CCA has obviously had the main awards, the Critics Choice Awards, pushed because of COVID, but the Documentary Awards, known as CCDA, is going to be held on November 16th, so there’s a forthcoming awards show to look forward to.

While Disney and Pixar (and to a lesser and more independent extent, GKids) are seen as the masters of cinematic animation, don’t sleep on Netflix. Last year saw them burst into the Best Animated Feature race at the Academy Awards, and this year, the streaming giant is again gunning for Oscar attention.

Mixing comedy and drama while making a political point is a tough nut to crack. As much as people like Adam McKay and Aaron Sorkin are good at making you angry and making you laugh in equal measure, there’s always folks who will take them to task for that approach.
