Sophie Wessex and Prince Edward have found themselves at the centre of backlash during their Caribbean tour. As the royal couple touched down in St.Lucia on Friday, the host of the radio show Tells It Like It Is, Sam Flood, did not hold back as he criticised the visit.
"I would like to know what is the purpose of this royal visit and who is paying for it?" he began. Sam added: "They kept a reception at the Governor's house for the Prince and Princess, and I would like to know whether all those attending were wearing any face masks for protection." Asking how the trip benefited the locals, he continued: "Who paid for the drinks and food that was being consumed at the Governor's house? Did the Royal family sponsor it, or did our government?" "What is the purpose of this trip to Saint Lucia? How are Saint Lucia and its people benefitting from this trip? What have we done to deserve this trip? I would like to know who is benefitting from this Royal visit.
''Who really are these royals, and what is their significance? It is not like they are quite high up in the Royal family. Who are they, and what will they bring to the island that will benefit us as a people." Sam voiced his opinion on the visit in Saint Lucian French creole - the language spoken by ninety per cent of the locals.
Sophie and Edward were warmly welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ernest Hilaire and the aide-de-camp to the Governor-General, Captain Cyril Saltibus, upon arriving in St Lucia on Friday. The next day, the pair journeyed to St Vincent and the Grenadines. During the visit, they have already been met with around fifteen people holding banners saying "reparation now", "compensate now", and "Britain your debt is outstanding".
