Wednesday AM Update: Tuesday box office figures To all the cynics out there who believe that the pandemic and streaming have annihilated theatrical moviegoing, well, Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home just beat the final $515.2M domestic total of 2019’s Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker with $516.4M. Worldwide with $1.16 billion, Spider-Man: No Way Home is officially Sony’s top grossing movie ever, unseating 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s $1.13 billion final global total.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is breaking box office records, even with COVID-19 holding back some audiences from going to the movies.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is unwrapping another big box office bounty on Christmas.The grand finale in Sony’s Tom Holland-led superhero trilogy added another $19.6 million from 4,336 domestic theaters on Friday, putting the film on pace to earn $92 million to $100 million over the traditional weekend.

As you’ve likely heard by now, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is dominating movie theaters, the box office, and arguably killing all the competition that is severely hurting in comparison. The superhero crossover movie has surpassed the $876 million mark worldwide, is already the highest-grossing film in North American in 2021, with $385 million, and is poised to hit $1 billion on Christmas Day, according to Deadline, which would make it the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide too.

Adding $30 million on Thursday from 4,336 locations, “No Way Home” has a domestic box office total of $386 million and $876 million worldwide, passing the $821 million total of the Chinese film “Hi, Mom” for second place on the global charts for the year.

This pushes it past No Time To Die and makes it the No. 3 movie of the year, and the top Hollywood release.

Three big event movies –Illumination/Universal’s Sing 2, Warner Bros’ Matrix Resurrections, and 20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man– were no match for Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which continued to dominate Wednesday with an amazing $27.8M. The Jon Watts-directed MCU title has a running U.S/Canadian total of $356.5M over six days, which is the third best for that range after Avengers: Endgame ($452.3M) and Star Wars: Force Awakens ($363.4M).

Tom Holland is on top of the world right now. Last weekend, his most recent superhero film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” not only broke seemingly every pandemic-era box office record, but the film went on to have the second biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time, behind only “Avengers: Endgame.” And it would appear that ‘No Way Home’ is going to be the first film to break the $1 billion mark since 2019.
