The late, great Sir Michael Parkinson's funeral went ahead this week, in front of 90 of the TV interviewer's nearest and dearest. Lovingly referred to as 'Parky' throughout his career, Michael sadly passed away aged 88 last month, surrounded by his wife Lady Mary and their three sons Michael Jr, Nicholas and Andrew at the family's Berkshire home. According to the The Sun, a cricket cap sat on his coffin alongside a red and white Barnsley FC scarf - the football team he was a lifelong supporter of - before the funeral service unfolded at St Michael's Church in Bray.
The melodic crooning of Frank Sinatra came from the speakers as mourners paid their final respects.
Then, after the church, friends and family headed to Michael's local, The Hind's Head pub, which was reportedly guarded by two doormen. "It was a very dignified send-off for a man who remained understated and classy to the end. Everyone was in good spirits remembering him and his achievements.
It was perfect," said a source.
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band played the iconic tune from his chat show, Parkinson. Meanwhile, Michael Jr, a television director, joined BBC Breakfast earlier this month, where he reflected on the global outpouring of love since his father's death. "We didn't expect the kind of outpouring, we didn't expect what happened.
I mean, not just here but in Australia. I mean, Australia, there was a golf course he used to be a member of and they put the flag at half-mast. Remarkable kind of gestures like that," he began.
