‘Silent Night’: Keira Knightley & Co. Blend The Holiday Film With The End Of The World Genre [TIFF Review]

From narrative films (“Zodiac”), Tv series (“Mindhunter”) to doc series (see everything Netflix is consumed with and their Ted Bundy doc), serial killers tend to be compelling subject matter for crime thrillers. And thus, yet another new film gestating at 20th Century Studios will spotlight the notorious true-life Boston serial killer with Matt Ruskin (“Crown Heights”) writing and directing “Boston Strangler” starring Oscar-nominee Kiera Knightley, according to Deadline.

‘Tis the season.  Well almost. And perhaps that is why AMC+ and RLJE recently swooped in and took the new holiday-themed dramedy Silent Night off the market (domestically at least) before its Toronto International Film Festival premiere tonight.  Who doesn’t love a good ‘ol Christmas movie, perhaps the most reliable genre for feel good feelings?

Writer-director Camille Griffin’s debut feature film “Silent Night” effectively blends two seemingly disparate genres — holiday films and impending apocalyptic cinema. Both high-pressure situations that get you thinking about what really matters, Griffin’s film navigates difficult family and friend dynamics with mordant humor as they face the end of the world together on Christmas Eve.
