Focusing instead on advancing her career, Shirley went on to find a new dance partner, Sammy Stopford, who later became her first husband after sparks flew between the pair.
"I got to know Sammy Stopford and it was a meteoric rise at 17,” explained Shirley. "I married Sammy at 18, we had five years together, we won everything.
I was the youngest female to ever do that.” Five years into their relationship, Shirley made the difficult decision to change partners and even fled to America with Corky Ballas, who went on to become her second husband and father to her son Mark Ballas, now 37. The dancer recalled: "I ran off with Corky Ballas to America.
