Proud new mum Shaughna Phillips has shared a relatable and poignantly real insight into her life as a parent, as she took to Instagram to update her fans on how her breastfeeding journey was going. The star welcomed her first child, daughter Lucia on April 4th, and has been on cloud nine with her adorable little girl ever since.
However one thing that hasn’t been as easy as she might’ve liked, was learning to get the hang of breastfeeding in the first few days following Lucia’s arrival. In an Instagram post, Shaughna shared a photograph of a bottle, containing a small amount of breast milk as she lamented: “This took blood, sweat and nearly tears!” In the early days following a birth, before “mature” milk comes in, the fluid produced by a new mum’s breasts is called colostrum, and has a thicker and more golden yellow colour than milk that is produced later on.
Although the volume is much less than you might imagine, as it is so concentrated, a newborn only needs a teaspoonful at each feed to get all the nourishment it requires. Over time, as a baby then grows, slowly but surely they’ll begin to have fewer, but longer feeds once the more “mature” milk has come in.
Breastfeeding can also take some serious getting used to and plenty of new mums have struggled with it, either due to supply issues, pain, or blood in the milk. One star who didn’t always find it easy was fellow Love Island star Molly-Mae Hague, who previously opened up about her breastfeeding difficulties.
