Co-founder Shane Smith is taking on a new role at Vice. The Wall St. Journal reports that he has been appointed editor-in-chief of Vice News.
“It’s your baby that you built, that you birthed,” Smith said to the WSJ of his new tasks, which come in the wake of several years of rocky financial times at the company.
Smith will reportedly host several shows, starting with Vice News: The Truth? a video podcast that will feature talk-show host Bill Maher as a recurring guest. Smith said the show will report facts free of political bias and expose misinformation, and will air on Maher’s podcast network and Vice TV.
The WSJ says Smith will also create content on the company’s social-media channels.
Vice exited the day-to-day news business earlier this year and is focused on long-form documentaries.
Smith blamed social media platforms for siphoning off Vice’s ad revenue.
Last year, Fortress and other lenders took over Vice for $350 million.
