Serena Williams was left in shock after Will Smith punched Chris Rock at the Oscars, just moments before accepting the Best Actor award for his portrayal of her dad. Will played the role of Serena and Venus Williams’ father, Richard Williams, in the biopic King Richard and scooped an Oscar for the role at the ceremony on Sunday evening. However, less than an hour earlier, things took a dramatic turn when the 53 year old jumped on stage after comedian Chris made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Chris made a quip about Jada’s shaved hairstyle and, despite initially being seen laughing, Will then shocked the audience by walking on stage and smacking the comedian around the face. In defence of his wife, who suffers from alopecia, the actor then angrily shouted: ““Keep my wife’s name out your f**king mouth.” Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter. Shortly after the incident, Serena posted a video of herself looking wide-eyed in disbelief.
In a follow-up video, she then told the camera she had to sit down out of shock. “I just sat down 'cus I was like I gotta put that drink down,” the mum-of-one said, as cheers could be heard in the Oscars screening room behind her. Serena later shared a video of herself standing right next to Chris Rock, who had his back to her.
She pulled a face at the camera, before looking sheepish and laughing, then walking away. Will apologised for the incident during his emotional speech after picking up his Best Actor Oscar. “I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people,” the father-of-three said, as he wiped away tears.
