A Scots MP has mocked Rishi Sunak for spending more than Donald Trump on Facebook ads.
Liberal Democrat Alistair Carmichael called the Tories a "poor understudy" of the former US President.
He also said that the Prime Minister "appears that they take a similar view" to Trump "on fair elections".
The Daily Mirror reported last week that the Tories ramped up spending on social media ads over Christmas. More than £104,500 was spent on Sunak’s page alone in the last month.
Trump spent just £87,229 in the same period.
It comes after the Tories nearly doubled the amount parties can spend in the run up to an election to an eye-watering £35 million.
Orkney and Shetland MP Carmichael raised the issue in the House of Commons on Thursday morning.
He said: “The Daily Mirror reported at the weekend that the Conservative Party is already spending more on the Prime Minister’s Facebook page on adverts than Donald Trump is spending on his, so it is pretty clear already the motivation for doubling the party spending limits.
“If this isn’t something that can be stopped, can the Commission at least do more to increase transparency so that people can see this shoddy attempt to buy democracy for what it is?”
Responding for the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission, Labour MP Cat Smith replied: “The Commission has said that any changes to spending and reporting thresholds should be supported by rigorous analysis which would of course be for the government to publish including the likely impact on public confidence and transparency.
"The Commission continues to make the case for changes to the political finance system to further improve public trust and confidence.”
