Cameron Smith, 22, was looking for a late-night munch at the Fort Kinnaird retail park at around 3.30am on Sunday after being out with friends. He was horrified when he spotted chaos in the kitchen where his food was being prepared, with rubbish cluttered all over the floor.
Staff continued to work on through the mess as hungry punters queued up to get their food. Cameron, who lives in East Lothian, told Edinburgh Live he found the state of the kitchen "absolutely disgusting".
He said: "Just watching our food being prepared in the kitchen when it was in that state, and it being so unclean and the staff handling our food at the same time, it just made me feel sick to be honest."
Cameron added that he considered raising the issue with the manager – but felt she wouldn't entertain his complaints. He continued: "Just observing the manager speaking to people, her attitude wasn't professional. I didn't even bother standing in the queue and complain to her. Even her uniform was dirty."
Posting the photo to social media, the clutter has received over 300 shares and comments, with many people sharing their disgust. Other locals responded to Cameron's post with their own experiences of the branch, including unclean toilets and messy tables.
McDonald's has apologised for the mess. Staff at the Fort Kinnaird restaurant, it said, have been told to take more care with their cleaning checks.
A spokesperson said: "We apologise to this customer for his experience. Hygiene and cleanliness is of the utmost importance to us and as soon as the matter was brought to our attention we were in touch with
