‘Scooby-Doo! and the Mystery Pups’ Preschool Series Greenlit for HBO Max and Cartoon Network

Joe Otterson TV ReporterThe “Dead Boy Detectives” series at HBO Max has brought on Beth Schwartz to serve as co-showrunner and executive producer, Variety has learned exclusively.Schwartz will now co-showrun the series with Steve Yockey. This is not the first time Schwartz has been at the helm of a show based on a DC property, as she served as the showrunner on the final two seasons of “Arrow” at The CW.

As 2022 coasts into the summer months, it’s time for studios to decide which of their new TV series get axed and which ones live on for another season or more. And it looks like two of this spring’s most critically acclaimed shows just had their lives extended.

The first-ever Scooby-Doo preschool series is headed to HBO Max and Cartoon Network. CGI-animated adventure comedy series Scooby-Doo! And the Mystery Pups will join the Cartoonito preschool block in 2024.

More Care Bears: Unlock the Magic is on the way. HBO Max and Cartoon Network have greenlighted six new 22-minute Care Bears: Unlock The Magic specials for the Cartoonito preschool block. Production is currently underway. Additionally, season 1 of the 2D animated series (48 11-minute regular episodes and two 22-minute specials) has been extended into early 2027 for the linear and streaming platforms.

HBO Documentary Films has acquired worldwide television rights to the documentary feature “All That Breathes,” the company announced Friday. Directed by Shaunak Sen (“Cities of Sleep”), the film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and was selected as the Grand Jury Prize winner in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

Does the world of DC Films seem a little schizophrenic at times? CNN Films and HBO Max have commissioned a new documentary about Little Richard, from Emmy-winning director Lisa Cortés (All In: The Fight for Democracy) of Cortés Filmworks. The film, Little Richard: I Am Everything (w/t), will take a deep dive into the life and career of the iconic musician, who did what he felt, and felt what he did—”at all costs”—presenting never-seen-before archival footage, as well as interviews with loved ones, colleagues, contemporary musicians and historians.
