The COVID-19 outbreak has bludgeoned the global entertainment business with travel restrictions and event suspensions and cancellations. But the way local production players see it, an oil price-linked Canadian dollar tumbling to a four-year low below 72 cents this week, compared to the American greenback, could be a boon for Hollywood North as major studios and streamers eye even greater currency savings on top of tax breaks when producing in Canada.
As new cases of coronavirus are declared on an hourly basis and the world reacts, production on multiple projects has already come to a halt. But many in the entertainment-industry trenches want to see the industry step up in the name of safety and do more — and suspend production across the industry.
After Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in New York City on Thursday over the coronavirus, several TV talk shows that film in the Big Apple have announced production is being suspended for the time being. As part of Cuomo’s declaration, any gatherings larger than 500 people have been banned in an effort to slow transmission of the virus.
