Sam Mendes’ 1917 victorious at Golden Globes

Well, the Directors Guild of America has had their say this evening. A few minutes ago, Sam Mendes was awarded the top prize from the DGA, wrapping up an Academy Award win in the process.

Laurence Fox has risked sparking further controversy by criticising Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes for including a Sikh soldier in his World War I drama 1917. 

Sir Sam Mendes’ war epic 1917 received a boost in its quest for Oscars success after winning the top prize at the 31st Producers Guild Awards.

When 1917 was announced as Best Film at the Golden Globes 2020, we all were left baffled! How did this Sam Mendes film win over hot favourites like Martin Scorsese's The Irishman and Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story? However, once watched, people understood why this technical marvel was the chosen one amongst several others. Furthermore, 1917 picked up 10 nominations at Oscars 2020, which includes Best Film and Best Director for Sam.

In an unexpected twist, two filmmakers won the Best Director prize at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards.  director Bong Joon-Ho and Sam Mendes, who helmed, won in a tie. 

Sam Mendes’ “1917,” a war epic that unspools to look like one continuous shot, was a surprise winner at the Golden Globes Sunday night, taking home trophies for best motion picture drama and best director for Mendes.

Sir Sam Mendes has said he “couldn’t be more delighted” by the success of his “highly personal” war film 1917, which received nine Bafta nominations.

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite,” Sam Mendes for “1917,” Martin Scorsese for “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and Taika Waititi for “Jojo Rabbit.”
