Cynthia Littleton Business Editor The SAG-AFTRA Foundation is set to break ground next month on a 15,000-square-foot facility at the union’s mid-Wilshire headquarters that will be a central hub for the foundation’s educational, career development and event activities in the Los Angeles area. The Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists will be built on the 10th floor of SAG-AFTRA’s longtime home in the famed Museum Square building. It’s expected to open its doors early next year, thanks to support from its namesake, the three-time Oscar winner who is one of the most renowned actors of all time. The facility will also feature the Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room, equipped with high-end technology to host screenings, panels and educational programs.

SAG-AFTRA is expressing its grief over the killing of Orlando TV reporter Dylan Lyons, a member of the guild since 2012. Lyons was shot and killed Wednesday while covering another shooting. Photojournalist Jesse Walden, his colleague at Spectrum News 13, was wounded but is recovering. The man suspected of having killed two others in the shooting rampage, including a 9-year-old girl, is in custody.

Angelique Jackson Rideback Rise, a non-profit accelerator focused on developing BIPOC-created film, TV, digital and audio content, launched by Dan Lin’s Rideback, has added to its leadership team, naming film producer Tracey Bing (“Nappily Ever After,” “Southside With You”) as head of content and veteran philanthropy advisor and former Charity: Water executive Sabrina Pourmand as founding executive director. Launched in July 2022, Rideback Rise is a 501c3 accelerator with a mission to “develop market-ready mainstream film, television, digital and audio entertainment aimed at advancing racial equity.” BIPOC-identifying creators may register to apply to the Rise Fellowship at www.ridebackrise.org beginning on March 15. The first cohort of Rise Fellows is expected to be announced this summer.

The nonprofit BIPOC accelerator Rideback Rise, launched last July by Dan Lin’s production company Rideback (The Lego Movie, It franchises) has today named film producer Tracey Bing as its Head of Content, appointing former charity: water exec Sabrina Pourmand as its Founding Executive Director, and adding Panda Express’ Chief Brand Officer, Andrea Cherng, to its Board of Directors.

AJ Tracey has announced the launch of a limited edition t-shirt, with proceeds going to Turkey and Syria earthquake relief.The rapper shared a post on his social media, writing that all proceeds from sales would go to Islamic Relief. The charity is providing aid to those affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6.“Special t-shirt drop to help with the aid in Türkiye and Syria,” he wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

Cynthia Littleton Business Editor Duncan Crabtree-Ireland has signed on for four more years as national executive director and chief negotiator for SAG-AFTRA. The contract extension was approved by the performers union’s national board via a virtual meeting. The vote tally was 87.68% yes and 12.32% no for keeping Crabtree-Ireland at the helm through June 20, 2028. Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA noted the importance of keeping Crabtree-Ireland in place as the union faces difficult contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in the coming months. The union’s master film and TV contract with Hollywood’s largest employers is set to expire June 30.
