During the conference, a reporter asked about his wife Nina‘s social media posts condemning the disrespect towards her husband.
“I 100% stand behind my wife and how she’s feeling because it’s not just about this year. Right now, my family have reached a point to where it’s really weighing on them and it’s very unfortunate just for me personally. This is just a game,” he said.
“This is not end-all, be-all. When it comes to basketball, I don’t mind the criticism of missing and making shots. But the moment it becomes where my name is getting shamed, it becomes an issue,” he continued.
He also spoke about his “Westbrick” nickname from some critics.
“I’ve kind of let it go in the past just because it never really bothered me, but it really kind of hit me the other day. Me and my wife was at a teacher-parent conference, and the teacher told me ‘Noah is so proud of his last name. He writes it on everything…and I kind of sat there in shock. It hit me, like, ‘Damn…I can no longer allow people, for example ‘Westbrick’ to me, shaming my name and legacy for kids.’ It’s a name that means more…my mom and dad, the ones that paved the way for me,” he went on to say.
Russell also said it’s been like this for his entire career.
“I don’t like to harp on it, but once it starts to affect my family…even my mom said something about it today. It affects them going to games. I don’t even wanna bring my kids to the game because I don’t want them to hear people calling their dad nicknames,” he
