Ukraine’s Recent Oscar Entries ‘Bad Roads,’ ‘Donbass’ and Sundance Docu Nabbed By Film Movement (EXCLUSIVE)

Elsa Keslassy International CorrespondentFilm Movement has acquired all North American rights to two previous Ukrainian Oscar entries “Bad Roads” and “Donbass,” as well as the Sundance award-winning documentary “The Earth Is Blue as an Orange.”“Bad Roads,” which was Ukraine’s Oscar candidate last fall, marks the feature debut of playwright-turned-filmmaker, Natalya Vorozhbit. The politically minded omnibus film, which premiered at Venice in 2020, is adapted from Vorozhbit’s play and unfolds in the recently invaded Eastern region of Donbass.“Bad Roads” features four stories shedding light on life in the front-line war zone of Donbass: one man alleging to be a schoolmaster is accosted by the military at a checkpoint, two teenagers wait for their soldier boyfriends in a dilapidated town square; a journalist is held captive and gets brutally assaulted; and a young woman apologizes to an elderly couple for running over their chickens.

Florida reggae band sues Dua Lipa for copyright infringement

Florida reggae band Artikal Sound System have filed a complaint in California federal court alleging that Dua Lipa infringed on the copyright of their 2017 track "Live Your Life" for her massive 2020 hit "Levitating." Their complaint claims Lipa and her co-defendants — including Warner Records and songwriters Clarence Coffee, Jr., Sarah Hudson, and Stephen Kozmeniuk — "listened to and copied 'Live Your Life' before and during the time when they were writing 'Levitating.'” It's a straightforward copyright claim, with the plaintiffs' attorneys alleging that, "[g]iven the degree of similarity, it is highly unlikely that 'Levitating' was created independently from 'Live Your Life.'” The allegation rests on the likeness of the two track's choruses (in Levitation's case, the chorus' second half), which have nearly identical chord structures — albeit ones relatively common in pop music — and vocal melodies, as well as lyrical similarities.

Oscars may not require vaccine as Canadian truckers and American workers protest mandates

Hollywood’s elite and the North American working class didn’t have much in common before COVID-19, but their differences are becoming more evident two years into the pandemic. As scores of Canadian truckers risk their jobs to protest vaccine mandates — with support from some Americans — Hollywood’s biggest stars are preparing to celebrate their jobs at one of the most prestigious film events of the year without being required to show proof of vaccination indoors. The Oscars may not be requiring proof of vaccination at its March 27 event at the Dolby Theater as long as people present a negative PCR test or a negative rapid antigen test on the day of the awards ceremony. There has been speculation that some nominees and attending celebrities may not be inoculated, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
